Recently appointed Jersey FA Community Coach for Girls, Lucy Even, and JTC Jersey Wanderers FC Ladies Team Assistant Manager, Sian Noble have started the process of establishing a Junior Girls Football section in Jersey and are running free fun skills and training sessions up at JTC Park.
All girls aged between school years 3-8 are invited to come and join the weekly sessions which take place every Saturday morning between 11am and 12:30. And so far there’s been a great response with 18 starters turning up for the first session with new faces making an appearance every week.
Commenting on why the section was being set up, Lucy said: “Girls and women’s football has become increasingly popular over the last year or so and the bigger FA is very keen to harness this growing enthusiasm and encourage participation in an all-female environment.
“Having played football ourselves since a young age but having to do so in a more male dominated environment which can be a bit intimidating, it was quite clear to both Sian and I that there wasn’t much opportunity for younger girls to get involved in just having a ‘go’ at the sport and testing out whether they like it or not. This was issue is further compounded if there are no school teams to play in.
“Hearing this sort of frustrated feedback first hand gave us the ‘light bulb’ moment to think: ‘We can do something about this’. The possibility has now been opened up to both new girls who might be interested in having that initial kick around, provides a playing opportunity for those already participating, our teaching skills as coaches is developed and JTC Jersey Wanderers is able to expand it’s offering as a community club.
Sian added: “We already entered a team into a Year 5 club tournament, after having only been set up for two weeks prior and, of course, all the other teams were made up of boys. The first few games were played to recognise like for like teams which were then put into groups to make the games fairer. We played two matches – which resulted in a 0-0 draw and a 4-0 win. A really huge confidence boost for the girls who have quickly understood how to work together and support each other on the pitch.
“Having a Ladies team is of course a huge help so the younger girls can look up to and learn from them and we can also bring them in to have an all female coaching team – alongside our ladies manager, Dan Sevior.
“Our main aim has always been to create a fun, yet challenging environment to allow an opportunity for the girls to progress in the sport whilst also enjoying themselves and making new friends. We hope to continue growing in numbers and the idea is to eventually have a Junior Girls Academy set up at JTC Jersey Wanderers that will be just as successful and fantastic as the one running for the boys.”
